As the weather cools, many of our clients are booking winterisation services to close up their pools. However, have you considered keeping your pool open a bit longer to enjoy the incredible benefits of cold water swimming?
The Benefits of Cold Water Swimming
✔️ Boosts Immune Function: Cold water can strengthen your immune system, making you more resilient to illness.
✔️ Improves Circulation: Cold water stimulates blood flow, helping you feel warmer and more energised.
✔️ Enhances Mental Health: The “cold shock” triggers endorphin release, reducing stress and enhancing mood.
✔️ Speed Up Recovery: Swimming in cold water can help reduce muscle soreness and inflammation.
✔️ Burns More Calories: Your body burns more calories as it works to maintain core temperature in cold water.
Ideal Water Temperature for Cold Water Swimming
While heated pools are typically kept at a comfortable 28°C, cold water swimming is usually done at around 10-15°C. For beginners, acclimating to the lower end of this range is ideal. Remember, the colder the water, the shorter your swim should be.
How Long Should You Swim?
Start with brief dips of 2-5 minutes to allow your body to adjust. Gradually increase the duration as you become more acclimated, but keep swims to a maximum of 10-15 minutes in very cold water (below 15°C). Always listen to your body and get out of the water if you start to feel too cold.
Tips for Cold Water Swimming
➔ Ease into it: Acclimatise gradually with shorter swims.
➔ Stay Safe: Have a warm area to retreat to and warm up immediately afterwards.
➔ Gear Up: Consider wearing a hat, gloves, or boots for comfort.
